Therapeutic rationale (For PCOS):

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) affects 6-10 % of women population and it is very often associated with insulin resistance. PCOS leads to amneorrhoea, anovulation, oligomenorrhoea, hirsutism etc.

Hyponidd in PCOS improves ovulatory function and several metabolic derangements associated with insulin resistance. Hyponidd decreases the insulin resistance and thereby corrects the three axes namely metabolic, reproductive and steroidogenic. Flavonoid constituents of Pterocarpus marsupium like marsupin, pterosupin and epicatechin are insulinogenic because of post-receptor intracellular mediation by d-chiro-inositol. Hyponidd thus, is safe and effective insulin sensitizer for the treatment of PCOS.

In PCOS associated with adolescent infertile women on oral contraceptive pills: As insulin sensitizer. Long-term management of PCOD.

PCOS- Ayurvedic view

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a condition characterized by an imbalance of hormones in women which can affect menstrual periods and ovulation. It is also one of the leading causes of infertility. Because of these distressing symptoms, women may also experience feelings of depression and anxiety.
PCOS affects about one in ten women of childbearing age. It is a very common problem amongst young women and teenage girls, sometimes even affecting girls as young as 11 years of age. If not treated early, serious health complications such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease can develop.
According to Ayurveda PCOS is a disorder involving pitta, kapha, medas( fat), ambhuvahasrotas ( Channels for water circulation), and arthava dhatu.
PCOS has following symptoms:
•    slight irregularities in menstrual cycle
•    mild pain on ovulation, downy hair growth
•    weight gain
•    irregular appetite
•    constipation
•    mild acne
•    Hirsutism, hair loss
•    Infertility

Ayurveda describes the disease as the disorder of any one of the three doshas and it states that kapha predominance manifests increased weight, infertility, hirsutism, diabetic tendencies, coldness, Pitta predominance manifests as hair loss, acne, painful menses, clots, heart problems and vata predominance manifests painful menses, severe menstrual irregularity, and low weight.
Ayurveda tips for PCOS.
1. Stop sweets, deep fried foods, carbohydrates, canned and processed foods, and oily foods
 2. Exercise well.
3. Use roasted and powdered peppercorns and cumin in daily diet.

The ingredients are proven to have a definite beneficial effect not only in lowering blood sugar levels but also in lipid lowering effect. Hyponidd minimizes the chances of diabetic complications, if started sufficiently early. The benefits of taking Hyponidd are supposedly a lowing of lipid levels and it gives protection against cardiovascular diseases.  It may also promote feelings of well-being and aid in boosting energy levels.
Composition

Hyponidd contains the following herbs and minerals: Momordica Charantia(bitter melom extract), Melia Azadirachta(lilac tree), Pterocarpus Marsupium(kino), Tinospora Cordifolia(guduchi), Gymnema Sylvestre(meshashringi), Enicostemma Littorale(mamejavo), Emblica Officinalis(amalaki), Eugenia Jambolana(raja jambo), Cassia Auriculata(tarwar), Curcuma Longa(haridra) and neem. All these herbs and minerals help the medicine to treat the patient in a more healthy and effective manner without any side effects.

Metformin, a biguanide derivative, has been used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes for nearly 50 years. It acts as an insulin-sensitising agent, lowering fasting plasma insulin concentrations by inducing greater peripheral uptake of glucose, as well as decreasing hepatic glucose output.
Advantages of taking Hyponidd over Metformin:
1 ) Hyponidd has no side effects where as patients taking metformin have complaints of side effects like gastrointestinal problems namely nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite and diarrhea.
2) Hyponidd helps in weight loss and helps the patients suffering from obesity but metformin does not help curing obesity in any way.
3) Metformin is expensive than most of the sulfonylurea’s available where as Hyponidd is cost effective and is not expensive.
4) Long-term use of metformin has been associated with increased homocysteine levels and malabsorption of vitamin B12. Higher doses and prolonged use are associated with increased incidence of B12 deficiency.
5) Hyponidd provides a sense of well-being and feeling of less tired and less fatigue where as patients taking metformin takes some time adjusting to the medicine.
6) Hyponidd being the herbal medicine helps the patient in curing diabetes and PCOS in a longer run without any side effects.
7) Hyponidd does not show any signs of clinical hypoglycemia unlike sulfonylureas.
8) With Hyponidd there is no need to add antioxidants and rejuvenators as it is an herbal preparation.

Lifestyle Change
Nutritional Considerations in PCOS
Careful food selection is a very important aspect of PCOS care. Some women with PCOS find success by reducing their total intake of carbohydrates (cereals, breads, pastas) and choosing to eat different types of carbohydrates that are less processed (whole wheat, brown rice, beans). Replacing refined carbohydrate products (white bread, white pasta, cakes, cookies) with whole grains, fruits and vegetables may help to reduce insulin response. You should also eat enough protein to help manage blood sugar levels.
Fitness Considerations in PCOS
According to many studies, women with PCOS can improve their insulin resistance just with moderate activity. Even if you exercise and don’t lose weight, you are still reaping very important health benefits. Exercise has been shown to improve use of insulin and can support dietary interventions to promote weight loss; it is important that the exercise program chosen is enjoyable.

PCOS- Diet and lifestyle suggested by Ayurveda

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, or PCOS, is caused by a complex hormonal imbalance. The condition affects the whole body, and can cause infertility, diabetes, heart disease and other serious medical conditions in some cases.

Diet and lifestyle choices can play an important role in controlling PCOS and its symptoms.
Diet and lifestyle as suggested by ayurveda for PCOS are as follows:

1. Adopt healthy eating habits. : By eating a diet low in carbohydrates and refined sugars you can help reverse the imbalances of glucose and insulin in your body that cause PCOS symptoms to flair up.

2. Fit exercise into your daily routine. : It can either be a 20-minute walk, playing outside with your kids, or going to a Pilates class, exercise has proven to boost metabolism and burn calories which helps to control insulin levels and, in turn, results in weight loss. Exercise can also help to stave off diabetes, a health risk for women in PCOS.

3. Relax. : Women with PCOS are more prone towards experiencing depression and mood swings. They often find themselves emotionally frustrated when their own bodies seem to purposefully work against them. So one has to relax and try and get over it. Yoga and meditation are use ful to hold the stress.
4) Eat regular, healthy meals including plenty of vegetables, fruit, salads, mixed grains and cereals
5) Drink less caffeine. Try drinking water instead, 6-8 glasses a day.
6) Cut down on alcoholic beverages.
7) Cut down on salt and salty foods to help reduce fluid retention.
8) Women with PCOS are at a higher risk for heart disease, and saturated fat and trans fats can increase that risk even more, so these fats should be limited or avoided by women with PCOS.
9) Reducing their total intake of carbohydrates (cereals, breads, pastas) and choosing to eat different types of carbohydrates that are less processed (whole wheat, brown rice, beans) will certainly help. Replacing manufactured carbohydrate products with whole grains, fruits and vegetables can help to reduce your insulin response. The diet also should include enough protein to control the amount of sugar in the blood.

Yoga, if practiced regularly, helps to regulate the endocrine metabolism and, as PCOS is an endocrinal disorder, the asanas (Yoga postures) help bring back normalcy. Not only does it help in healing PCOS and the whole body but it improves overall health giving you a great boost. Yoga does this by toning up and strengthening the system, it helps in weight control and in regulating all the internal systems of the body.  Through the practice of Yoga the vital Life force is channeled up, stimulating all the functions of the nerve plexus as well as the endocrine glands that are responsible for secreting the hormones.

•    Follow a diet that is Yogic and Sattvic. This means a diet that is pure and simple, and primarily vegetarian.
•    Keep away from stress and tension ridden situations. Worrying isn’t going to help you one bit.
•    The Kayakalpa yoga is an intrinsic exercise, done to regulate the endocrine metabolism of our body. Since, PCOS is one of the endocrinal disorders; this yogasana is applicable to patients suffering from PCOS.

Hyponidd for Obesity

Obesity can be defined as the condition of a human being in which the body contains more fat than required and which can lead to a diseased state. It is technically characterized by the increased storage of fat molecules in the adipose tissue thereby causing insulin resistance.  Obesity is usually caused by an abnormality of feeding regulatory mechanism. This can result from either psychogenic factors that affect this regulation or actual abnormalities of regulatory system in hypothalamus. But in many cases no specific cause can be identified. Contributing factors include genetic factors, eating habits childhood over nutrition and social customs, among many others. Obesity also plays an important role in the development of diabetes. It decreases the number of insulin receptors in insulin target cells throughout the body, thus making the amount of insulin that is available, less effective in promoting its usual metabolic effects.
Diabetes can also result in obesity which is because of the inactive lifestyle as a result of it. This disease often has no symptoms, and is usually diagnosed by tests that indicate glucose intolerance, and is treated with changes in diet and an exercise regimen.
Hyponidd is an herbal medicine developed in India. The benefits of taking Hyponidd are supposedly a lowing of lipid levels and protection against cardiovascular diseases. This promotes the ability of physical activities in a patient thus making him fit and active leaving lesser chances for a body to accumulate fat. The supplement may also promote feelings of well-being and aid in boosting energy levels. Hyponidd may possess antioxidant properties as well.
Hyponidd contains the following herbs and minerals: Momordica Charantia, Melia Azadirachta, Pterocarpus Marsupium, Tinospora Cordifolia, Gymnema Sylvestre, Enicostemma Littorale, Emblica Officinalis, Eugenia Jambolana, Cassia Auriculata, and Curcuma Longa. Sex and meditation

The two instincts in the life are the instinct to survive and the instinct for sex. It is not possible to ignore either of these instincts. But through meditation the inherent energy for these instincts could be channeled into other useful purposes also. This is especially important for monks, nuns etc who have decided to keep aloof from sex voluntarily.

If one tries to suppress the natural instinct of sex simply, it would come up in other forms., especially sexual perversions. Therefore the sexual instinct has to be taken care of for a balanced life. Monks and the nuns go through a purification process, which is one of their rituals. This would remove sexual drive from them completely. The sexual energy, which would be present in each and every individual, could be transformed into love, kindness, good actions, thoughts, feelings, etc, through prayer and meditation. Many of the monks who live in the temple leading a holy life through meditation testify that they could not even bring up sexual drive and there is no sexual desire left in them. A person who is having a balanced and harmonious life by having sex also could practices meditation and soon they would understand that they could have complete control over their emotions and could direct part of the energy for love towards every thing around them and also to themselves.  The sex life also would be improved dramatically after several months of meditation.

Thus it could be seen that meditation has a great role to play in sex. It is required to drive the sexual instinct to other useful purposes in the life of monks, nuns etc. It is required in the life of a normal person to have improvement in the sexual life and at the same time to divert some of the energy to love things around you.

If you want to lose weight, then you must consume fewer calories than what you expend. You must create a calorie deficit, either by reducing your caloric intake, increasing your physical activity level or both, turning towards Ayurveda and yoga is any day better than all the fancy slimming medicines in the world.

Ten Commandments for a Slim Body

Proper diet
1) Avoid food and beverages, which increase Kapha and medha, like sweets, sweetened drinks, large quantities of carbohydrates and oily food. Consuming wheat products more than rice products helps. Using Green gram and horse gram helps in reduction of Kapha.Increase Fiber Intake like Cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, bitter gourd (Karela), mint  & spices like dry ginger, cinnamon, black pepper.
2) Try not to skip meals, small well-spaced meals are desirable. Spreading food intake improves nutrient absorption, minimizes blood sugar fluctuations, and decreases fat-storing hormones and enzymes. Avoid very sweet, salty or oily food especially at night, always try and drink warm water.
Lifestyle
3) The lifestyle you lead decides a lot about how obese or how slim you will be. If you lead a lifestyle parked on an office chair for most hours of the day, or have vices like smoking, alcoholism, etc they are harmful and add those ungainly pounds. So try and lead a healthy lifestyle.
4) Try and indulge in more sexual activity, do more physical and mental exercises. Sleeping during the daytime should be avoided at all costs.
Exercise
5) Walking is best to begin with followed by running, swimming. Mental exertion like being involved in finding solutions to problems restricts food consumption and reduce intake of calories.
6) Yoga has an effect, which is permanent in nature for weight reduction. It helps achieve control over mind and behaviour (one can easily control food habits and change life style to avoid obesity.) Asanas, Sun salutations, Pranayama, Agnisar are different forms of yoga that can be done to stay slim.
Body Cleansing
7) Panchakarma or five actions, is a purification, detoxification, cleansing and rejuvenating program for the body, mind and consciousness. For weight loss Virechana (Purgation Treatment) or Basti (Medicated Enema) are useful.
8)  Also steam baths and regular ayurvedic massages like udvarthana (Weight loss Massage) are recommended.
Using Ayurvedic Herbal Supplements
9)  All herbal supplements under the supervision of qualified physician are safe to use, and  have no side-effects. Guduchi, Amla powder, Triphala or musta can be taken mixed with honey.
10) To stay slim have food, which is dry and light in quality, without oils and fatty substances. Drink warm or hot water, which should preferably be treated with herbs having pungent and bitter taste. Honey with fresh lemon juice is an excellent home remedy.
